Finding the right wedding photographer — don’t get it wrong
You’re getting married, and suddenly it’s chaos.
Hundreds of photographers.
Clashing styles.
Prices that go from “oh that’s fair” to “are they serious?”
So how the hell do you choose the one who’ll tell your story — the one you won’t regret in ten years?
I’ve photographed over 200 weddings.
I’ve seen couples get lost in the process.
I’ve been called in last minute by panicked lovers who made the wrong choice.
So let’s skip the stress.
Forget the “How to choose your photographer in 5 easy steps” guides.
Here are the real questions you should be asking.
"Choosing your destination wedding photographer — the real questions that matter"
1. The price — how much does a good destination or pre-wedding photographer really cost?
Let’s keep it real — great photography isn’t cheap. And when it comes to destination weddings or pre-wedding sessions, that matters even more.
Why?
Because this isn’t just someone showing up with a camera.
It’s someone you trust to travel, adapt, blend in, and capture your story with intention — wherever you are in the world.
A destination shoot means hours (sometimes days) of travel, planning from afar, dealing with light, weather, culture, logistics — and still making magic.
So if you find someone offering a full-day destination shoot for $500?
Ask yourself:
• Do they do this professionally — or is this just a side gig with a passport?
• Will they give their whole energy to your story?
• What are you really saving… if your photos feel flat or disconnected?
👉 What’s a fair range for a destination photographer who’s all-in?
Expect anywhere from €2500 to €6000 depending on travel, experience, and how much is included (flights, lodging, number of days, etc.).
And if you love a photographer but the price feels out of reach — talk to them.
• They might offer a shorter session.
• Or focus only on the pre-wedding.
• Or spread the payments over time.
Because this isn’t just a shoot.
It’s how you’ll remember this moment.
How you’ll tell the story — again and again.
Choosing your destination wedding photographer the real questions that matter
I don’t just shoot moments — I capture your truth.
2. The style — what really speaks to you?
You know that feeling when you see a photo and something stirs inside?
That’s a good sign.
Every photographer has a style.
And it’s not just about color vs. black & white — it’s a vision.
Here are a few common styles you’ll see:
• Fine Art → Soft, luminous, elegant
• Moody → Warm tones, deep shadows, cinematic feel
• Photojournalism → Raw, candid, nothing staged
• Editorial / Cinematic → Stylized, sharp, like a movie still
Me?
I don’t fit in a box.
I love movement.
Shaped light. The stuff that feels real.
Photos that hit hard — the kind that say more than they show.
Sometimes black and white. Sometimes color.
Sometimes soft. Sometimes bold.
What matters most? You.
👉 My advice?
• Don’t just scroll Instagram highlights — dig deeper. Look at full galleries.
• Picture yourself in the images. Do you feel at home in them?
• Skip the trends.
What’s hot today might feel totally off in ten years.
3. The feeling — do you actually connect?
Honestly? This might be the most important part.
Your photographer will be with you all day.
In the quiet, intimate moments.
Maybe even in your room while you’re getting dressed.
Right there with your emotions.
And if you’re not comfortable?
It will show in the photos.
👉 So ask yourself:
• Do you like the way they talk, the way they show up?
• Do you feel like they get you?
• Do you trust them to capture you, not just pretty pictures?
As for me — I don’t say yes to everyone.
If I feel we’re not a good match, I’ll tell you.
Because you deserve a photographer who really fits.
Someone who sees you for who you are — and knows how to show it.
4. Experience — can they handle everything?
A wedding isn’t just about “taking pretty photos.”
It’s about knowing how to adapt.
👉 A solid photographer needs to know how to:
• Work in any kind of light — harsh sun, rain, candlelit rooms, no problem
• Handle the unexpected without freaking out
• Be invisible when needed, and step up when it matters
• Anticipate key moments before they even happen
I’ve shot weddings in thunderstorms, in dark wine cellars, in blazing heat.
And honestly? I love it. Every wedding is a new challenge.
You don’t want a photographer who panics at the first weird shadow or backlight.
You want someone who thrives in the unpredictable — and still delivers.
5. Reviews — what do past couples say?
Anyone can write a good bio.
But what people say after the wedding? That’s the truth.
👉 Take a look at:
• Google reviews — the words people use, what comes up again and again
• Testimonials on the photographer’s site
• How they interact with past couples — it tells you a lot
If a photographer’s good, it shows.
If no one’s talking about them after the wedding?
That’s a red flag.
In short — how do you make the right choice?
✅ Love their style — not just one image, but their full body of work
✅ Trust them — they’ll be by your side the whole day
✅ Check their experience — they need to handle anything
✅ Don’t choose based on price alone — these are your memories
